Balayage is a freehand hair-coloring technique: instead of foils or caps, the colorist "sweeps" lightener strand by strand (balayage means "sweeping" in French), creating a gradual, sun-kissed dimension — deeper roots melting into brighter ends. It lasts 3 to 5 months without touch-ups, and because the regrowth line is invisible, it is the lowest-maintenance color technique there is.

Traditional highlights are woven in fixed patterns and wrapped in foil, lightening from the root — which is why a visible regrowth line appears within weeks. Balayage is painted by hand from mid-lengths to ends with soft, blended transitions, so it grows out invisibly.
In practice: highlights give you a uniform, brighter all-over effect but demand touch-ups every 6–8 weeks; balayage gives you natural dimension and needs a salon visit only every 3–5 months. If you want low maintenance, balayage wins.

Balayage on dark hair: yes, it works beautifully
Some of the most stunning balayage results happen on dark brown and black hair. The secret is lifting in stages to protect the hair fiber: sometimes we reach the target tone in one session; on very dark or previously colored hair, I plan it in two.
The most flattering tones over dark bases are caramel, chocolate, soft copper and honey. I keep the root deep and concentrate the light through the mid-lengths and ends — that contrast is what makes dark-hair balayage look so expensive.
